What is Counselling? What is Psychotherapy?

Counselling & psychotherapy are professional services that support people to develop better understanding of themselves and others, address life difficulties and make the changes they want in their lives.

At BHT, Hollie draws on a wide range of therapy interventions and has skills in working across the spectrum of life difficulties. Therapy services work with current problems, crises and longer term difficulties. Hollie provides both short and long-term services, according to individual client needs. Sessions are available for individuals, families and groups; adults, teens and children.

 

Confidentiality

Counselling and psychotherapy services at BHT are confidential. Hollie works within clearly contracted, ethical relationships to support clients in exploring and resolving life’s difficulties. She has over ten years experience offering psychotherapeutic services both individually and in groups. Hollie has a Graduate Diploma in Counselling, and is a professional member of PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia).

 

How will BHT support you?

Therapy is the process of meeting with a counsellor or psychotherapist for the purpose of resolving problematic behaviours, beliefs, feelings and related physical symptoms. Therapy uses an interpersonal relationship to help develop the client’s self-understanding and to make changes in his or her life. Therapists act as a neutral party who can listen and try to understand without judgment. Therapy can help you learn about yourself by pointing out patterns and giving honest feedback. Clients also learn techniques and strategies to deal with current or existing problems.

Some key points about therapy:

  • Therapy usually takes place on a one-to-one basis or may be done in group settings.
  • The client is able to choose a therapist and therapy style which is best suited to their particular situation.
  • A therapist and client will normally sit with one another for a designated amount of time to discuss the issues which are presented by the client.
  • The therapy process involves a ‘getting to know you’ period just like any new relationship.
  • The therapist and client play an equal role in the therapy process. There is no ‘expert’ in a therapy relationship.
  • The therapist’s intention is to make the therapy process both safe and supportive.
  • Everything that happens in therapy is confidential, except if necessary for your own or another person’s safety is at risk.

 

Therapy Services at BHT

Counselling focuses on enhancing your capacity to cope with specific life challenges such as relationship endings, bereavement and anxiety. Counselling can also help with resolving crises, reducing distress, developing goals for change and improving wellbeing.

Psychotherapy focuses on achieving change in the self. When patterns are noticed in the nature of a client’s difficulties, psychotherapy can help clients achieve better self-understanding and change long-standing patterns of behaviour that may be disrupting relationships, work or any other important life flow.

Hollie combines Counselling and Psychotherapy with other Wellness techniques, based on the Self Crafted Wellness method for wholebody wellness.

 

Respect for your values and beliefs

Counsellors and psychotherapists work with respect for your values, beliefs, and uniqueness. The ultimate goal for therapy is autonomy and self-determination for clients. The non-judgmental and accepting nature of therapy makes it possible to face difficult experiences, understand and witness unknown parts of the self, and process painful situations. Working with a therapist allows you to move beyond where you can go by yourself.

Counselling is: The process that occurs when a client and counsellor set aside time in order to explore difficulties which may include the stressful or emotional feelings of the client. The act of helping the client to see things more clearly, possibly from a different view-point.
